Behavior Problems in Dogs
Published in Hardcover by Amer Veterinary Pub (June, 1992)
Authors: William E. Campbell and Paul W. Pratt
Average review score:

... easily the best ...
Ever since we got our dogs ... we have been reading and reading dog related books ... mostly out of interest and sometimes because we needed advice with particular issues we're encountering with our canine family members ...

Some books were far too general, a few (fortunately very few) actually contained bad or poor advice ... most were reasonably good & useful ...

But by far ... this is the best we have come across ...

The author makes no pretence at offering quick or instant solutions ... in the first few chapters and without emotional tangents (we all think our dogs understand us *laughs*) he takes the reader through the psychology and mindset of a dog, ... it becomes very clear that the author believes a dog cannot be effectively trained simply by rote, punishment or treats ... but through a process of learning to understand their true nature and positive healthy reinforcement ...

But what makes the most difference is that ... the author is prepared, without fear of alienating his readers, to require dog owners to delve into their own psychology and inner nature ...

This approach makes the book all the more useful ... it made me realise the futility of trying to train our dogs, without first considering how I might be affecting them, with my behaviour and reactions (conscious & subconscious) ... I was asked to consider how my own understanding or lack ... might be causing or contributing to the dogs' good as well as bad behaviour ... The book also provides useful case studies and plenty of practical advice.

It does require a little more concentration than one would normally devote to the reading of a pet training book ... but the effort is well worth it ... any dog owner, new and experienced will benefit ...

... a different kind of book ...
... This is a very good read ... this book offers much more than the usual approach of 'tell the dog to sit, and reward it with a treat' ... the author approaches the problem of bad dog behaviour from the owner's perspective, as well as from the dog's perspective ... a holistic approach that avoids harsh punishment ... The author tells us that in order to correct a dog, oftentimes we must first as owners correct ourselves, our approach ... our whole attitude ... we are encouraged to try and learn the nature of dogs, their instincts and propensities ... the numerous case studies are also extremely useful ... All in all, a very good book, informative, sensible and effective.

the BEST canine behavior book in my library
When faced with problem behaviors in a rough collie back in the 70's, I read every dog behavior book on the shelves at the time. William Campbell's book was the only reference which addressed the issues I needed to understand. Campbell's description of 'active defense reflex' vs 'passive defense reflex' dogs made all the difference in my understanding of Shasta's behavior. He gave me all the advice I needed to turn this behavior around with very specific instructions which worked to perfection. We went on, after reading this book, to earn a CD in obedience whereas before I could not even touch his body without being bitten ('active defense reflex'). I recommend this book to anyone I contact who is dealing with dog behavior problems and I'm very interested to see how this new edition compares to the one I purchased in the 1970's!

Tea & Etiquette: Taking Tea for Business and Pleasure
Published in Hardcover by Capital Books Inc (01 August, 2002)
Authors: Dorothea Johnson, James Norwood Pratt, and Susan Jerde
Average review score:

Good Reference on tea entertainment
I find this book very useful and informative. The author presents the material in a concise and down to earth manner. The etiquette portion of this book contains do's and do not's that leaves no questions. The tone of the book is conversational just like the topic it explains. If you are thinking about having a tea party for the first time or attending to one, this book is a must read!

This book was a pure delight
I enjoyed this book so well, I'm sending a copy to my sister. The Simple pleasures in life can be the greatest. Graciousness in easy to read and apply form.

An excellent guide for etiquette in the 90's.
This book is an excellent follow-up to Mrs. Johnson's miniature book "The Little Book of Etiquette". It primarily focuses on etiquette in the tea room, but it also discusses everyday etiquette as well as business etiquette. This is an easy to understand, user-friendly book. A must for anyone who loves to take tea.

Indian Summer
Published in Paperback by Catalan Communications (July, 1989)
Author: Hugo Pratt
Average review score:

A very entertaining story with great artwork.
Manara's art speaks for itself, so no need to go on and on about it. But the stories written by him are usually pointless sex tales. The difference with Indian Summer is that Pratt actually gave him a great story (the struggles of early settlers for survival, and their unpredictable relations with the native indians). Manara expresses the emotions of his characters beautifully through his pencil. For those who like action, there is plenty of that as well. The duo's other book 'El Gaucho' is also a powerful graphic novel. This was a $20 well spent. PS: I've reviewed hundreds of graphic novels at my personal web page. Give it a shot.

great story, great drawing
erotism for art sake

manara should draw males
male character are as good as the females. He should draw both.

S/He
Published in Paperback by Firebrand Books (February, 1995)
Author: Minnie Bruce Pratt
Average review score:

Minnie Bruce the Revolutionary In-Between Writer
And you thought this text was about lovers who traverse gender and sexual dimensions of US culture? Since it's such a rich read, take another look at the revolutionary's socialist political cultural criticism. Minnie Bruce is doing a Lao Tzu impression to achieve a socio-cultural damnation of the US--"doing without doing." With lovers, gorgeous sexual scenes, deep intimacy in the foreground of her tiny "chapters"/stories, my favorite in-between writer is providing an understated socialist feminist critique. It is a genre-crossed book.

Like the soft spoken and appearing Southern lady gone North as she is, Pratt's got a near subliminal "undertext" going on beneath the surface reading of everyday life stories. One of the most delightfully subversive texts I've read of a modern poetic prose writer.

Oh give this one to all cultural and literary criticism students, queer theorists, transgender and gender studies scholars, and the poets, of course.

If all this is new to you, open the door
Words flutter across the page like doves in flight, painting a picture of love like none I have ever seen before, yet as familiar to me as a lover's morning smile or an evening hug. Having already been moved to tears by Feinberg's *Stone Butch Blues*, Minnie Bruce Pratt was the natural next step toward understanding and awareness that only unfolded more of myself. If all this is new to you, open the door. If you are already a fan, you know what to expect. You won't be disappointed.

Minnie Bruce Pratt's extraordinariness
Minnie Bruce Pratt is a rare combination of intellect, artfulness, and compassion. I find disturbing the review sited above which claims that some gay and straight readers will find Bruce Pratt "repulsive," that she will be perceived as not "real"--not a "real" lesbian, not a "real" woman. Why is this ridiculousness being perpetuated in what should be a concise, intelligent synopsis/review? I mean, really, does it have to be so banal? I love Minnie Bruce Pratt. She speaks in gorgeous, accomplished poetry the language of the unheard. That, again, is a very rare thing.

Six Records of a Floating Life (Penguin Classics)
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (November, 1983)
Authors: Shen Fu, Leonard Pratt, Chiang Su-Hui, and Fu Shen
Average review score:

A passionate and romantic story
"Six Records" (also known as "Six Chapters of a Floating Life"), c. 1805, is an extraordinarily frank autobiography that is totally unprecedented and unparalleled in the history of Chinese literature. It describes the life of the author Shen Fu and his beloved wife, Ch'en Yun (1763-1803), in extremely revealing detail. The intimacy and joy shared by the couple are as unusual by normal standards of Chinese married life as is the author's daringness in revealing them to others. Their close, playful relationship stands in defiant opposition to the staid decorum of married life expected by Confucian ideology.

A thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring read. Ch'en Yun is a woman ahead of her time who admirably balances her love of learning and passion for life with her duties and obligations as a traditional Chinese wife.

excellent book!!
a very, very good book to get to know the everyday life of late imperial Chinese!

A charming and touching autobiography of a poor scholar
This is a most charming and touching story of a poor Chinese scholar-painter struggling to make a decent living under poverty and mounting debts. In his autobiography, Shen Fu shares with us his experiences, his love for a talented wife and other simple things in life, his family and friends, and travels throughout Manchu China. Despite mounting poverty, he has great passion for living and these records of his experiences and impressions are as relevant to us as it were to him 200 years ago. A highly recommended book and a definite "must-read" over the weekend.

Very Busy Life of Olaf and Venus: Car
Published in Hardcover by Candlewick Press (May, 2001)
Author: Pierre Pratt
Average review score:

Olaf and Venus are fun
Another excellent book in Pratt's four-book series. Olaf and Venus get in their car and head to the beach, checking out the sights along the way. A bird, a porcupine, a plane, the sea are all part of the trip. Pratt's charming and simple artwork bring each item to life--a word on one side of the page is shown again on the facing page with a full-color illustration of Olaf and Venus having fun. A wonderful book that kept my 9-month-old son amused on a plane trip recently. Highly recommended.

Excellent for a three month old
My three month old was captivated by the bright colors throughout the story. The single word pages allowed me to make up the story as I read. I could talk for an extended amount of time if she was interested in a particular page. She would coo and ahh at the red car. An excellent book for an infant.

A FAVORITE BoardBook
Wonderful illustrations and simple text make this an all-time favorite with babies and preschoolers!

14 Modern Contest Solos
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (August, 2000)
Author: John S. Pratt
Average review score:

A Timeless Classic for Rudimental Snare Drummers
John Pratt's book is a staple that all serious percussionists should play at some point. Pratt utilizes many rudiments in every solo and incorporates a lot of "over the barline" techniques. Many of my own drum students have performed these solos for solo and ensemble festivals and recitals. This book is a great tool for drummers in the medium to advanced stages. I highly recommend!

A great solo peice with technical solos
This book is great! It contains great peices of music for the snare drummer. It is made to be rudimentaly sound. Meaning the solo's are full of many rudiments. This makes it full of great playback, and full of great learning. The solo's range from diffucult to very diffucult. It is not for the the faint at heart drummer. Hodge Podge(the easiest solo) cannot be played unless you have the ability to play rolls(5/7/9/10/11/13),flams,ruffs,and sixteenth notes with accompyning eight notes. The hardest title is My Friend Norman and Gingersnap. The 6/8 excercies are very diffucult in their own right. This is great solo book for any above average to advanced snare drummer!

American History Stories You Never Read in School but Should Have Vol.1
Published in Paperback by Randall Company (01 January, 1993)
Authors: Mara L. Pratt and Mara L. Pratt-Chadwick
Average review score:

Three Thumbs Up!
When I first came across the book, the title grabbed my attention, and the blurb on the back absolutely captivated my mind. This photo-reproduction of an original history book that was used over a century ago conveys strong feelings of pride and patriotism that can be inhaled off of each and every page. Unlike the history text books of today, the stories in this book is told by the author in first person voice. The author purpose and sincere desire is to tell the children for whom this book was written, some of the stories of those times which will help them to understand the kind of men and women these patriots were, how brave they were, and how much they were willing to suffer for "the cause which seemed to them right." This book tells the stories of the American Revolution through the perspectives of the American colonists, and focuses mainly on the courageous behavior of the bold and daring colonists. It offers a history that tells more about the real character of the men who founded this country; of their great integrity, wisdom, and courage. It gave me a much greater understanding of the kind of bravery and patriotic spirit the men and women had in those days, as well as a greater love and appreciation for this country. This focused piece of literature, with its witty prose, makes for a smooth, enjoyable read; appropriate for its audience--the "little folks"--as well as Liberty Lovers of all ages.

the title says it all
This is a delightful little book. It has many short stories from the Revolutionary War--from the Boston Tea Party to a young girl able to save General Washington. First printed in 1889, it has many stories that are not in any history books today.

The 1000 Hells (Kindred of the East)
Published in Paperback by White Wolf Publishing Inc. (May, 1999)
Authors: Kraig Blackwelder, Tim Clancy, Geoffrey C. Grabowski, Lindsay Woodcock, Jack Norris, Richard E. Dansky, Bruce Baugh, Rob Kaminsky, and George Pratt
Average review score:

Very excellent game sourcebook
This game sourcebook is just as you might expect by the title a very good sourcebook for the 1000 Hells. I really can't add to what has already been said, just give my support

Enter the Gates of Yomi...
This has to be one of the best books I've read through in the Kindred of the East expansion. The 1000 Hells is not to be played with lightly -- it's serious business for those who wish to commune with the likes of Emma-O, Mikaboshi, Tou Mu, Rangda, and a host of other Yama Kings (and Queens) that rule Yomi. It shows you how to create a Yama King/Queen, the type of hell s/he would rule, systems on how to go to hell (literally, no pun intended), the effects of most disciplines while in Yomi (both Kuei-jin and Cainite), even how to commune and bargain with the Rulers of Hell and become an akuma (both standard and the exquisitely monstrous princes of Hell versions). Coupled with the latter half of Killing Streets (where it discusses the Broken Mirror systems), and you have the makings of a very memorable, spine-chilling chronicle. Highly recommended.

ST Must for eastern games
Whether you are running Kndred of the East, Hengeyokai, or god forbid a Hsien chronicle, this is the best book for giving the eastern world of teeth. From the greater Akuma to the Demons of Iron and violence, this book has everything you need to bring some major havoc into your game. And if its intrigue you want this book hs plenty to offer.
